Bolivia, first settled in the 19th century by farmers and timbermen, was incorporated in 1911. It is named for the South American country that supplied fertilizer once shipped through the town. In 1975, Bolivia became the county seat for Brunswick County, North Carolina. The town of Southport NC, originally called Smithville, was the county seat prior to Bolivia.
